The act also requires that every American has health insurance through a private company or a federal program. Citizens who do not enroll in health insurance will be subject to higher taxation.
The primary goal of the reform is to ensure health care for all Americans. By making insurance more affordable and accessible, the act helps protect those in need. Reduced premiums and out-of-pocket costs are available to individuals and families that earn less than 4x the federal poverty level. The plan also requires large employers to provide health benefits to full-time workers starting in 2015.
