Shopping for a family health insurance plan is difficult, but not impossible.
It may come down to just knowing what questions to ask to get all the information you need to make a good decision. Here are some good questions to ask your insurance agent when shopping for coverage for your family.
First, make sure you ask your family health insurance company about the costs of all procedures, prescriptions, and copays, in addition to your monthly premium. You may have a lower premium, but if you are paying out the nose every time you have to take your kids to the doctor, it may not be worth it. Compare the premiums of different plans but make sure you are also comparing the costs of prescriptions and copays and the other things that add up in the event you have to make a claim.
Second, find out whether the insurance plans available also cover vision and dental needs. Some will provide these as part of a package deal and others will not. If this is important to you, or if you like the convenience of being able to pay your health, dental, and vision coverage in one lump payment each month, you will want to see if there are any packages that include all these services or if you will have to pay for each type of coverage separately.
Third, make sure you understand the policy on preexisting conditions for each insurance policy that you consider. This is important for many reasons. You might have a medical condition that will not be covered if you switch from one insurance policy to another. You might also have a condition in your past that precludes you from certain coverage in the future. Make sure you ask about the preexisting condition policy. Buying family health insurance does not have to be scary or difficult, but it is important that you go in with the right questions so you can glean the most knowledge about the different plans available and what they cover.
